Mike Nock

After his first Australian recordings with the Three Out Trio in 1960, jazz pianist/composer Mike Nock went on to spend 25 years in the USA, pursuing his chosen career in the company of some of the world's greatest musicians. His first major international acclaim came as founder/leader of the innovative quartet The Fourth Way (1968-71). He has since continued to keep a high profile worldwide through his many recordings and tours. Currently domiciled back in Sydney where he teaches at the Sydney Conservatorium, Mike remains active in a wide range of creative musical activities. These include composition for orchestra, dance and contemporary music ensembles, as well as touring and recording with his own group.

Career Highlights: he recorded 19 albums of his own music and appeared as a featured sideman on more than 50 others with many of the leading musicians in contemporary jazz. Co-produced, hosted and was musical director for his own TV series Nock On Jazz for TVNZ in 1983. Produced and composed the soundtracks for several short films and TV documentaries including a feature film (Strata). Three time recipient of Nea Jazz Fellowships (US) the broad interest of his compositions can be gauged by the spread of organisations commissioning music from him since his return from overseas. These include The Australian Chamber Orchestra, Pipeline Ensemble, Ten Part Invention, The Wellington Symphony (NZ), Limbs Dance Company (NZ) and dancer/choreographer Sue Healey.

Winner of the Australian Critics Award for piano/keyboards in 1991 and 1992, his quartet was voted Australian Jazz Group of the Year at the `91 MO awards. The group recently made a major tour of Canadian Jazz festivals and appears regularly throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Mike Nock's Big Small Band

This is the most recent manifestation of pianist/composer Mike Nock's creative energies. Making its first public appearance a year ago, the group has established itself as a welcome addition to the Sydney scene. Showcasing some of Sydney's most interesting younger players together with internationally seasoned jazz veterans and featuring original compositions, the band delivers contemporary musical excitement along with broad audience appeal.
