Sydney All Star
The "Sydney All Star Big Band" was formed in 1990 by one of Australia's finest exponents of the Trumpet, Ralph Pyl, who has brought together 16 of the finest Jazz and Recording musicians on the Australian Jazz scene today. The band quickly caught the imagination of the jazz fans with it's dynamic soloists and powerful hard swinging treatments of both contemporary and traditional arrangements, performing at Jazz Festivals, Corporate and Private events. The Band's performances at the Manly International Jazz Festival won many fans and the approval of visiting performers, such as BMG recording artists Vanessa Rubin from New York, who performed with the band before a standing ovation of thousands.
The "Sydney All Star Big Band" also accompanied US Vocalist and Pianist Buddy Greco on his last two Australian tours and performed in the Sydney Town Hall to an appreciative audience in a special tribute to Duke Ellington and his music. The Band has performed and recorded with some of Australia's finest artists, including Ignatius Jones, Steve Taylor-Brown, Monica Trapaga, Darren Paul, Frank Bennett, Grace Knight, James Morrison, Don Burrows, Kerrie Biddell and in 1998 backed one of Australia's leading Actors and Vocalists Tom Burlinson, in what has been regarded as one of the best shows of Australian stage, "Frank- The Sinatra Story In Song". The Band's concert repertoire consists of modern arrangements as played by the Big Bands of Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Rob Mc Connell Boss Brass, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Count Basie, Bob Mintzer, Bob Florence and many others.
The Band also has an extensive library of the traditional dance band era of Glen Miller, Les Brown, Stan Kenton, Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa and vocal arrangements of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and many more. The "Sydney All Star Big Band" boasts the finest Jazz soloists and commercial musicians that Sydney has to offer, all of whom are involved with major performances in film, television and Jazz ensembles throughout Australia.
