Baecastuff combines the creative energy of six of Australia's most talented musicians. Saxophonist Rick Robertson, well known for his work with mutli award winning and internationally acclaimed band Directions in Groove (d.i.g) (Mercury/Verve), leads the ensemble. Phil Slater who also works with Mike Nock and The Australian Art Orchestra plays trumpet and live sampler. Pianist Matt McMahon is a rising star recently performing with US legend Bobby Privette. Alex Hewetson, bass, has a huge list of performance and recording credits to his name including d.i.g, Don Burrows, Vince Jones, James Morrison and Savags Garden. Simon Baker's dynamic and melodic drumming currently drives the Vince Jones band, and he has had recent international exposure and critical acclaim as part of the Scott Tinkler Trio. The percussion chair is filled by Aykho Akhriff who is of Spanish-Moriccan origin. An acknowledged master of his art, Aykho brings and exotic energy to the music.
Baecastuff has been playing together now for over three years and has developed a unique sound that one reviewer described as "jazz in spirit but open to developments in funk and electronic music such as drum 'n bass". The band calls it Jungle Jazz. Live credits include Jazz Festivals around Australia including Darling Harbour, Sydney Opera House, Brisbane Heat and the New Caledonia Jazz Fest. Numerous appearances in local Sydney venues such as the Basement and Harbourside Brasserie have strengthened the ensemble.
Baecastuff have released two CDs, both on the Rufus Record Label distributed by Polygram. The debut CD "Big Swell" received excellent reviews and was nominated for an Aria Award. The new CD, "One Hand Clapping" has also received great reviews. Apart from a version of the Bjork Classic "Army of Me", all the material is original. The music has matured along with the band and takes on a more original and unique flavour with everyone sounding as though they've really got something to say and are comfortable about saying it.
